The conservation treatments mainly take place in the conservation workshop which is a short walk from Crystal Palace Station. The workshop has an extensive variety of traditional tools and presses so support the full range of binding repairs, as well as contemporary conservation equipment such as a suction table and localised extraction for solvent treatments. It has passive environmental management, with HEPA filtered heat recovery extractor fan and is protected by security cameras, and insured for Goods in Trust up to £100,000.
Site specific consultations can also be given, which is often preferable for archives and collection areas as storage and environmental conditions can be assessed. Conservation treatment should always be appropriate to the future usage and issues such as reader access, storage and safe handling are crucial to any solutions proposed.
