If you have never commissioned conservation work before, here are a few things that might help you gather some information to send in with the contact form below. There is also a labelled photo of the parts of the book to help you describe them.
Dimensions: Height of Item (mm) x Width of Item (mm) x Depth of Item (mm) Closed if it's a book please.
Date: Publication or manufacture
Number of Pages, an estimate for unnumbered pages is useful.
Binding Structure: Can you see any sewing, tapes or cords? Don't worry if not, its just extra useful information.
Materials: Leather, paper or cloth as far as you can tell.
Photos: Front, Back, Spine, Inside Boards, Head/Tail, Detail of Damage
Description of Condition: Is it torn/stained/brittle/creased/soft/powdery/discoloured/broken? What does it feel like? Are there parts detached or missing? If possible, how may of the pages are damaged and to what extent. Is there evidence of insects or mould such as teeth marks, a smell or colourful staining?
Frame: Is it framed? Do you want to reuse the frame? Is it against the glass? Is there a window mount?
How do you want to use it? Is it going on display? Do you want it to be fully functional? It is going to be digitised? Is there a date that you need the work completed by? Does it need protection for storage or transportation?
